Protium heptaphyllum (Burseraceae) en el folklore del Paraguay Oriental

Abstract

Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl.) Marchand es un árbol que tiene amplia distribución y utilidad en Sudamérica cálida. Es conocido como proveedor de una cotizada resina aromática. En este trabajo se estudia el papel de la planta y la resina en el folklore del Paraguay Oriental. Se aplicaron dos perspectivas de investigación: el análisis de fuentes escritas y el abordaje etnobotánico. Éste fue encarado mediante la colecta del material vegetal y el desarrollo de encuestas in situ con informantes calificados. Los resultados obtenidos brindan información sobre la planta, detalles sobre la nomenclatura vernácula, conocimientos sobre sus usos y aplicaciones y, sobre todo, sobre sus propiedades medicinales. Se discute la importancia utilitaria de la planta y su relevancia en la etnomedicina local. Asimismo, se resalta su importancia histórica y cultural y se llama la atención sobre la declinación de su empleo en la actualidad.ad.

The Protium heptaphyllum tree is very widely found throughout tropical South America and it is used by the people for a considerable variety of purposes. However, it is mainly known as a source of a highly valued aromatic resin. This paper studies the role of the plant and its resin in the folklore of Eastern Paraguay. Two views of research are applied: an analysis of written sources, and a focus on ethnobotany. The latter was carried out by means of the gathering of plant material and the conducting in situ of interviews with qualified informants. The results provide general information on the plant, detailed information of its vernacular names, its uses and applications and, particularly, of its medicinal properties. The extent of its use and the significance of the plant in local ethnomedicine are also discussed. In addition, the paper highlights the tree’s historical and cultural relevance, as well as the decline of its use in recent years.
