Más aquí...o más allá: la evolución del personaje hagiográfico entre fines del siglo XVI y comienzos del siglo XVII a partir de las primeras biografías piadosas sobre Teresa de Ávila (1590-1609)

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse the evolution of the hagiographic character between the late 16th century and early 17th century, basing itself on study of the first pious biographies of Teresa of Avila (1512-1582). The article focuses on the psychology of the saint in the texts written by the Jesuit Francisco de Ribera (1590) and by the Carmelites Tomás Sánchez Dávila (1606) and Juan de san Pedro y Ustárroz (1609). Proceeding in this way, we can observe that their prose expresses the development of new character traits in the protagonists of the vitae sanctorum. Humanist development gives way to the growing abstraction of Baroque literature, at a time when interconfessional conflicts prompted a redefinition of the figure of the saint within Catholic theology.

Cet article vise à analyser l’évolution du personnage hagiographique entre la fin du 16e s. et le début du 17e s. en se fondant sur l’étude des première biographies pieuses de Thérèse d’Ávila (1512- 1582). L’article se concentre sur la psychologie de la sainte dans les textes écrits par le jésuite Francisco de Ribera (1590) et par les carmes Tomás Sánchez Dávila (1606) et Juan de san Pedro y Ustárroz (1609). Procéder de la sorte permet d’observer que leur prose exprime le développement de nouveaux traits de caractère chez les protagonistes des vitae sanctorum. Le développement humaniste y cède la place à l’abstraction croissante de la littérature baroque, à une époque où les conflits interconfessionnels incitent à redéfinir la figure du saint au sein de la théologie catholique.

Dieser Artikel untersucht die Entwicklung von hagiographischen Figuren vom Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts bis zum Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts. Wir basieren uns auf die Studie der ersten frommen Biographien, publiziert von Teresa von Ávila (1515-1582). Darüber hinaus konzentrieren wir uns auf die phsychologischen Züge der Protagonisten in Texten des Jesuiten Francisco de Ribera (1590) und der Karmeliten Tomás Sánchez Dávila (1606) und Juan de san Pedro y Ustárroz (1609). Dabei können wir beobachten, dass ihre Prosa die Entwicklung eines neuen Charakters der Protagonisten der vitae sanctorum ausdrückt, wobei humanistische Kritik der wachsenden Anziehungskraft der barocken Literatur weicht, in Zeiten, in denen interkonfessioneller Konflikt die Neudefinierung der heiligen Figur in der Theologie des Katholizismus veranlasste.
