Sobre historias contadas y no contadas: Naciones religiosas y construcción de memorias afroumbandistas en Argentina

Abstract

En este trabajo brindo una visión polifónica y plural de la historia de las religiones de origen afrobrasileño en Argentina, mostrando que entraron al país tanto a través de Porto Alegre como de Montevideo. Rescato la memoria y los nombres de quienes abrieron los primeros templos locales y resalto la diversidad de las naciones religiosas batuqueras a las que pertenecían. Intento ayudar a la comprensión de cómo las versiones de estos primeros tiempos están condicionadas por la pertenencia, de quienes recuerdan, a determinadas naciones y linajes religiosos que ordenan la memoria histórica, señalando cuáles serían los ancestros relevantes para el relato. Me baso en los testimonios brindados por quince pais y mães de santo de acreditada antigüedad en la práctica religiosa en Argentina.

In this article I offer a polyphonic and plural vision of the history of religions of Afro-Brazilian origin in Argentina, showing that they entered the country through both Porto Alegre and Montevideo. I rescue the memory and names of those who opened the first local temples and highlight the diversity of the Batuque nations to which they belonged. I analyze how the versions of these early times are conditioned by the belonging, of those who remember, to certain nations and religious lineages that order the historical memory, pointing out which ancestors are relevant to the story. Data for this article come from interviews with fifteen pais and mães de santo of accredited antiquity in religious practice in Argentina.
