La génesis de la estética estadounidense

Abstract

En este artículo planteamos una aproximación general sobre el surgimiento de la estética en la cultura estadounidense del siglo XIX. Utilizando un enfoque histórico-crítico, desarrollamos este trabajo en tres partes. En primer lugar, analizamos los argumentos de las dos teorías interpretativas dominantes, cuyo núcleo argumental consiste en sostener la ausencia de una tradición estética estadounidense en el siglo XIX. La teoría del influjo pionero, por un lado, está asociada a la tesis de que la ausencia de una estética estadounidense en el siglo XIX, se debe a la cultura materialista y refractaria a las artes que se engendra a partir de la figura del pionero. La teoría de la colonización cultural, por otro lado, gira alrededor de la idea de la importación pasiva de paradigmas culturales europeos como rasgo característico de la estética estadounidense de la época. En segundo lugar, sostenemos que en las obras de numerosos pensadores estadounidenses desde (al menos) el siglo XIX aparecen esbozos que sientan las bases de la cultura estética de los Estados Unidos. La relevancia de las obras de estos autores, frecuentemente injustamente olvidados, es pasada por alto debido a las limitaciones de las teorías dominantes mencionadas (la teoría del influjo pionero y la de la colonización cultural). Finalmente, a partir de lo desarrollado en el punto anterior, argumentamos que es posible desarrollar una interpretación alternativa a las dos teorías dominantes, que remarque el carácter fragmentario, discontinuo e interdisciplinario del surgimiento de la estética en el siglo XIX en Estados Unidos. Esta interpretación (en este artículo sólo esbozada) es fundamental, a nuestro juicio, para tener una comprensión cabal del surgimiento sistemático de la estética estadounidense (ya sea que la ubiquemos en la obra de George Santayana o en la de John Dewey) y las diversas formas en que tematizaron sobre la experiencia estética en su contexto.

In this article we propose a general approach to the emergence of aesthetics in 19th century American culture. Using a historical-critical approach, we develop this work in three parts. First, we analyze the features of the two dominant interpretive theories, who- se core argument consists in sustaining the absence of an American aesthetic tradition in the 19th century. The theory of the “pioneer influence”, on the one hand, is associated with the thesis that the absence of an American aesthetics in the 19th century is due to a materialistic culture and refractory to art generated from the figure of the pioneer. The “cultural colonization” theory, on the other hand, revolves around the idea of a passive importation of cultural paradigms from Europe as a characteristic feature of American aesthetics of the time. Second, we argue that in the works of many American thinkers since (at least) the ni- neteenth century there are sketches that lay the foundation for American aesthetic culture. The relevance of the works of these authors, frequently unjustly forgotten, is overlooked due to the limitations of the dominant theories mentioned (the theory of “pioneer influen- ce” and that of “cultural colonization “). Finally, starting from what developed in the previous point, we argue that it is possi- ble to develop an alternative interpretation to the two dominant theories, which highlights the fragmentary, discontinuous and interdisciplinary nature of the emergence of aesthe- tics in the 19th century United States. This interpretation (in this article only outlined) is fundamental, in our opinion, to have a complete understanding of the systematic emer- gence of American aesthetics (whether we place it in the work of George Santayana or in that of John Dewey) and the various ways in which they thematized about aesthetic experience in its context.
