Cronología radiocarbónica de estilos alfareros arqueológicos: Inicios del período Intermedio Tardío, Noroeste argentino

Abstract

Presentamos una estrategia metodológica para la ubicación temporal de estilos alfareros que combina el análisis contextual y el tratamiento estadístico del conjunto de datos radiocarbónicos disponible. El análisis abordó tres grupos de alfarerías con una amplia expresión regional e importantes afinidades estilísticas: San José, Hualfín y Molinos, representativos de los inicios del período Intermedio Tardío en la región valliserrana del Noroeste argentino. Se trabajó con una muestra exhaustiva de 28 fechados, evaluando diferentes grados de certeza en la asociación muestra-evento, y discriminando la asociación entre los eventos datados y los conjuntos cerámicos. Este tratamiento de los fechados permitió jerarquizar aquellos más confiables y seleccionar una submuestra cualitativamente superior. Los datos depurados se emplearon para evaluar la hipótesis sobre la cronología tardía de los estilos mediante modelación estadística bayesiana. Como resultado se pudieron detectar datos anómalos y ubicar el lapso aproximado de la producción de los conjuntos estilísticos entre los siglos once y catorce dC, momentos que se asocian a desarrollos locales preincaicos. Asimismo, se establecieron tendencias diferenciales entre los tres grupos estilísticos considerados, observando antigüedades mayores para Hualfín y Molinos

We present a methodological strategy for the temporal location of pottery styles that combines contextual analysis and statistical treatment of the available radiocarbon dataset. The analysis considered three pottery groups with a broad regional expression and important stylistic affinities: San José, Hualfín and Molinos, representative of the beginning of the Late Intermediate period in the Valliserrana region of the Argentine Northwest. An exhaustive sample of 28 radiocarbon dates was used, evaluating different degrees of certainty in the sample–event association, and analyzing the association between the dated events and the ceramic assemblages. This treatment of radiocarbon dating allows us to rank the most reliable ones and select a qualitatively superior subsample. The refined data were used to test the hypothesis about the late chronology of the styles using Bayesian statistical modeling. As a result, it was possible to detect anomalous data and to locate the approximate period of the production of the stylistic assemblages between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries AD, moments that are associated with local pre-Inca developments. The available data also allowed us to establish differential trends among the three stylistic groups considered, observing an earlier chronology for Hualfín and Molinos
