El avance del desierto y el modo de vida imperial: Representaciones de la desertificación de la zona cuyana de Guanacache

Abstract

Ulrich Brand y Markus Wissen señalan que a partir del proceso de colonización del siglo XVI se impone un modelo de productividad, que define un “modo de vida imperial”, en el marco del acaparamiento capitalista, de tierras y recursos. En esta presentación se analizan distintas obras ficcionales y gráficas que abordan el problema de la desertificación de la región cuyana de Guanacache, un espacio que entre los siglos XVI y XIX fue de tránsito andino y de pasaje entre las ciudades de Mendoza, San Juan y San Luis. El avance del desierto, la sequía y la hambruna sobre este natural sistema acuífero donde se fueron replegando las comunidades indígenas que huían del dominio colonial es el gran tema articulador de la novela de Mercedes Araujo, La hija de la cabra (2012). Este texto desmenuza su construcción formal y el modo en que se emparenta con las ficciones de Antonio Di Benedetto y Juan Draghi Lucero, y también con la serie “Vestigios Huarpes” del artista plástico Fidel Roig Matóns.

Ulrich Brand and Markus Wissen point out that from the colonization process of the 16th century, a model of productivity is imposed, which defines an “imperial way of life”, within the framework of capitalist hoarding of land and resources. This presentation analyzes different works that’s address the problem of desertification in the region of Guanacache (Cuyo, Argentina), a space that in the 16th and 19th centuries was an andean path between the cities of Mendoza, San Juan and San Luis. The advance of the desert, the drought and the famine on this once natural aquifer system where exiled indigenous communities survived, is the great articulating theme of Mercedes Araujo’s novel, The daughter of the goat (2021). Also, this text analyzes its formal construction and the way in which it is related to the fictions of Antonio Di Benedetto and Juan Draghi Lucero, and with the series “Vestigios Huarpes” of the painter Fidel Roig Matóns.
