Versiones de la crítica nacional: dos lecturas del Arte nuevo a fines del XIX

Abstract

A fines del siglo XIX dos facciones antagónicas se disputan la hegemonía del campo intelectual español: el tradicionalismo católico ortodoxo y el liberalismo krausista. Por lo tanto, dentro de ese contexto, cobra importancia procurar la reconstrucción del enfrentamiento teórico de Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo con Manuel de la Revilla, ya que se plantea como un caso cuyo análisis permite entender el origen de aquella división en el seno de la crítica hispánica. Por otra parte, el contraste de las lecturas del Arte nuevo, de Lope de Vega, realizadas por Menéndez y Pelayo y por Alcántara García ayuda a ilustrar el tema en cuestión mediante un ejemplo con resonancias precisas.

At the end of the nineteenth century, two antagonistic factions disputed the hegemony of the Spanish intellectual field: the orthodox Catholic traditionalism and the Krausist liberalism. In such a significant context, to look for evidences of the theoretical confrontation between Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo and Manuel de la Revilla acquires real importance when trying to understand the origin of opposing viewpoints between the Hispanic critics. Besides, the readings made by Menéndez y Pelayo and Alcántara García on Lope de Vega’s Arte nuevo helps to illustrate the subject by means of an example with precise resonances.
