“Entre la Potestas y la Auctoritas”: Un recorrido histórico por el dualismo del poder en el occidente cristiano

Abstract

El presente artículo apunta a realizar un recorrido histórico y analítico por las relaciones establecidas entre el poder temporal y el espiritual, partiendo de tiempos medievales y considerándolas en diferentes niveles de análisis. En este sentido, el trabajo se organiza a partir de una serie de pares dicotómicos, los cuales consideramos fueron claves dentro de la evolución de las relaciones entre lo temporal y lo religioso. Estos parten de la clásica antagonía medieval entre regnum y sacerdotium, para ser sustituidas por el nuevo par entre Derecho y Rey en el siglo XIII. Avanzan hasta enfrentar a la “Iglesia” y el “Estado” en torno al prototipo globalizador que ofrece el concepto corporativo del corpus mysticum y, finalmente, terminan encontrando su tensa y contradictoria unión en el concepto de “monarquía católica”.

This article aims to make a historical and analytical pathway trough the relations established between the temporal and spiritual power,starting from medieval times and considering them at different levels of analysis. In this sense, this work is organized from a succession of dichotomous pairs, which we believe were key in the evolution of the relationship between the temporal and the religious. Those pairs start from the classical medieval antagonism between regnumand sacerdotium, to be replaced by the new pair between Law and King in the 13th century. They move forward until face the "Church" and "State" around the global prototype that offers the corporate concept of corpus mysticum, and ultimately end up finding their tense and contradictory union onthe concept of "Catholic monarchy".
