Propietarios y arrendatarios en el mundo concejil bajomedieval: algunos problemas de interpretación (Ávila, siglo XV)

Abstract

El objetivo del presente trabajo es reflexionar sobre el significado de las relaciones de arrendamiento en la baja Edad Media castellana, tomado como ejemplo el concejo de Ávila. Estas relaciones se establecen principalmente entre las oligarquías urbanas, propietarias de numerosas porciones de tierra en las aldeas, y los campesinos. Se realiza en primer lugar un breve análisis historiográfico, para identificar los puntos en disputa y las ambigüedades existentes en torno a la caracterización de los arrendamientos. Luego se recurre al análisis documental para identificar los rasgos más destacados de esta relación social. En especial, se destacan tres aspectos: primero, el fundamento económico de la relación, basada en la propiedad de la tierra; segundo, el carácter del rentero en tanto fuerza de trabajo desposeída; y tercero, el sometimiento social y personal del arrendatario. Se intenta destacar de este modo que el aspecto económico y contractual del vínculo no anula la dependencia social y personal del productor.

The objective of this work is to explore the meaning of lease relations in the late Castilian Middle Ages, taken as an example the council of Ávila. These relations are established mainly between the urban oligarchies, owners of numerous portions of land in the villages, and the peasants. First, a brief historiographical analysis is carried out to identify the points in dispute and the existing ambiguities regarding the characterization of the leases. Then, documentary analysis is used to identify the most outstanding features of this social relationship. In particular, three aspects stand out: first, the economic foundation of the relationship, based on the ownership of the land; second, the character of the tenant as a dispossessed work force; and third, the social and personal subjection of the tenant. It is tried to emphasize in this way that the economic and contractual aspect of the bond does not annul the social and personal dependence of the producer.
