Arte y revolución: sobre los fotomontajes olvidados de Tomás Maldonado

Abstract

Este artículo presenta un análisis sobre los fotomontajes realizados por el artista Tomás Maldonado entre 1946 y 1947 para Orientación, el periódico oficial del Partido Comunista Argentino. Estas producciones eran desconocidas (o silenciadas) por los historiadores del arte argentino hasta los inicios de la investigación que emprendí en el año 2003 y que se materializó en mi tesis doctoral (2010), e incluso hasta hace muy poco tiempo no se incluían en el repertorio de obras del artista. Desde la perspectiva aquí propuesta, en cambio, los fotomontajes de Maldonado constituyen dos intervenciones cruciales para abordar el intenso vínculo entre arte, revolución y política que atraviesa el proyecto de la vanguardia de arte concreto argentina. Por un lado, porque remiten a la militancia de varios miembros de la Asociación Arte ConcretoInvención en las filas del comunismo local. Por otro, porque son producciones en las cuales es posible observar la estrecha relación existente entre la propuesta del concretismo argentino impulsado por Maldonado y el programa puesto en marcha por las vanguardias soviéticas en los años posteriores a la revolución bolchevique.

This article presents an analysis of the photomontages made by artist Tomás Maldonado between 1946 and 1947 for the official newspaper of the Argentine Communist Party. These productions were unknown (or silenced) by historians of Argentine art until the beginning of the research that I took in 2003 and concludes with my doctoral thesis (2010), and even until very recently they were not included in the repertoire of works by the artist. From the perspective here proposed, the photomontages of Maldonado constitute two speeches of great interest to address the strong link between art, revolution and politics through the project of the art concrete Argentinean avant-garde. On the one hand, because they refer to the militancy of several members of the Art Concrete-Invention group in the ranks of local communism. On the other, because they are productions in which it is possible to observe the close relationship between the proposal of the Argentine concretism driven by Maldonado and the programme launched by the Soviet avant-garde in the years after the Bolshevik revolution.
