Estudios intermodales: revisión de antecedentes

Abstract

La memoria operativa permite que el organismo pueda manejarse en el ambiente que lo rodea dado que éste es complejo pero, a la vez, estructurado, esto es, con suficientes constantes que le permiten utilizar el pasado como predictor del futuro. Los objetos del nicho ecológico, además de poseer características tanto visuales, como espaciales, tienen aspectos táctiles, olfatorios y gustativos asociados. Así, el organismo posee una capacidad de integración de los inputs perceptuales que necesita del procesamiento de la memoria operativa. Precisamente la integración intermodal es un caso paradigmático de la necesidad de ir más allá de la modularidad. Se presentan y discuten investigaciones que muestran resultados de integración intermodal entre representaciones gustativas y otras modalidades como la olfativa, auditiva y visual. Se concluye que los datos del laboratorio no deben perder de vista la relación natural que posee el individuo con el ambiente en el que se desenvuelve y que el individuo es adaptado al ambiente sin dificultades que ponen en riesgo su vida.

Working memory allows the human body to be adjusted in the surrounding environment since it is complex but, at the same time, structured, i.e. constant enough to use the past as a predictor of the future. The objects of the ecological niche, besides having features of both visual and spatial aspects are tactile, olfactory and gustatory. Thus, the body has a capacity of integration of perceptual inputs. These processes are conducted in the working memory. Intermodal integration is a paradigmatic case of the need to go beyond modularity. In the present article some research findings that evidence intermodal integration between gustative representations and other modalities such as olfactory, auditory and visual are discussed. It is concluded that experimental data should not lose sight of the natural relationship that the individual has with the environment in which it operates and that the individual is adapted to the environment without difficulties that threaten their lives.
