Hacia una revisión del modelo tradicional de cambio teórico: coexistencia entre física cuántica y relatividad general

Abstract

En la filosofía de la ciencia del siglo XX tuvo lugar un aguerrido debate entre realistas científicos y antirrealistas, en el que se ha prestado especial atención a la cuestión del cambio teórico. En el presente trabajo argumentaremos que la imagen lineal de cambio teórico como sucesión por reemplazo de teorías, sobre la cual se monta aquel debate, es un modelo demasiado simplificado. En efecto, no puede dar cuenta del caso de bifurcación teórica, que conduce a la convivencia entre teorías científicas consideradas fundamentales pero incompatibles entre sí, como es el caso de física cuántica y relatividad general.

In the strong debate in the philosophy of science of the 20th century between scientific realists and anti-realists, the issue of theoretical change was particularly considered. In this work, I will argue that the lineal picture of theoretic change as succession by replacement, on which that debate is based, is an oversimplified model. In fact, it cannot account for the case of theory bifurcation, which leads to the coexistence of supposedly fundamental but incompatible theories, as the case of quantum physics and general relativity.
