This paper intends to describe, through a literature course, the importance that governments gave, especially the Brazilian (1964-1985) and Argentinean (1976-1983) dictatorships, to national heroes. For this purpose, we will focus on the comparison between Tiradentes and San Martin, two emblematic figures in the histories of Brazil and Argentina. We intend to confront these characters for their historical significance and their differences, both having reached the status of heroes through dissimilar routes. The heroes are part of the symbols created by nations to generate feelings and national unity. They are figures that were prominent in the history of a country, but then are taken by governments and, based on short-term needs, turned into myths, glorifying their actions and becoming immortal. These are the cases of San Martin and Tiradentes. The dictatorships in Argentina and Brazil took advantage of the figure of these heroes, among other symbols, during their governments. The relevance of studying how the heroes are taken up by these regimes is, allowing us to understand how they formed part of their strategy for the search for legitimacy.
