Migrations in South America

Abstract

This chapter presents the main traits of migratory processes within South America, particularly regarding intra-regional migration. We start by tracing the historical origins of the flows and their current relevance. We then connect intraregional migrations with changing demographic, sociopolitical, and economic conditions in countries of origin and destination. We conclude by a review of the impacts of the global financial crisis and emerging migratory trends.
