La etnicidad de los querandíes, una discusión no resuelta

Abstract

Querandíes es la denominación de un grupo étnico que aparece en las fuentes coloniales, especialmente durante los siglos XVI y XVII. Se supone que este pueblo indígena habitaba y recorría el espacio desde el río Salado en la provincia de Buenos Aires hasta el río Carcarañá en la provincia de Santa Fe. Desde estos lugares, los querandíes interactuaron intensamente con los primeros conquistadores españoles que llegaron a esta región, oscilando entre hostilidades e intercambios pacíficos de bienes e información. La existencia de este grupo étnico ha interesado tanto a los arqueólogos como a los etnólogos del siglo XIX y principios del XX, cuando se referían sobre todo al “origen” de los querandíes y a su pertenencia a una entidad o tradición cultural que los incluyera; es decir, discutían si los querandíes eran guaraníes, araucanos o pampas. En este trabajo proponemos analizar el contexto histórico en el cual este grupo étnico aparece citado en las fuentes e intentaremos delimitar sus características a través de los documentos tempranos. Luego realizaremos un repaso por los diferentes aportes que brindaron los investigadores acerca de los querandíes y analizaremos sus diferentes teorías acerca de su filiación, caracterización y ubicación territorial. Por último, expondremos las nuevas perspectivas de etnicidad a tener en cuenta en nuestra investigación sobre el panorama étnico de la región.

Querandíes is the name of an ethnic group that appears in the colonial sources, especially during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is assumed that this indigenous group inhabited and travelled from the Salado River in the province of Buenos Aries to the Carcarañá River in the province of Santa Fe. From these places, the Querandíes intensively interacted with the first Spanish settlers to arrive in the region, ranging from hostilities to peaceful exchanges of goods and information. The existence of this ethnic group has been of interest to both archaeologists and ethnographers of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, especially when referring to the “origin” of the Querandíes and their belonging to an entity or cultural tradition; in other words, if the Querandíes were Guaraníes, Araucanos, or Pampas. In this work we analyze the historical context in which this ethnic group appears cited in the sources and we attempt to delimit their characteristics using the early documents. Then we make a review of the different contributions provided to the researchers about the Querandíes and analyze the different theories in regards to their affiliation, characterization, and territorial location. Finally, we explore the new perspectives of ethnicity to be considered in our research on the ethnic landscape of the region.
