O Brasil: Território e Sociedade no início do século XXI: a história de um livro

Abstract

Discutimos os principais conceitos e argumentos que nortearam as escolhas de pesquisa e as reflexões do livro O Brasil: Território e Sociedade no início do século XXI, escrito em co-autoria com Milton Santos. O artigo corresponde a uma conferência ministrada no Workshop Cidades na Amazônia: 15 anos de reflexões cidades, redes e ambientes urbanos, Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas das Cidades na Amazônia Brasileira (NEPECAB), Universidade Federal do Amazonas em 2010. Em primeiro lugar buscamos caracterizar brevemente as condições políticas e epistemológicas presentes na década de 1990, no momento da elaboração da pesquisa e do livro. Em segundo lugar tratamos da idéia de território usado, conceito basilar na obra, sua gênese e desdobramentos. O terceiro ponto aborda o problema da totalidade e as partes ou, em outras palavras, da formação socioespacial e das regiões, assim como a necessidade de elaborar uma teoria maior e uma teoria menor, ao tempo que sugerimos uma teoria das mediações para traçar um retrato do país. Num quarto momento explicamos o plano analítico e o plano sintético que definem a estrutura do livro e os aspectos metodológicos e operacionais enfrentados no processo de pesquisa. Finalmente, refletimos sobre as relações intrínsecas entre método e política, tanto na interpretação do presente quanto no reconhecimento de tendências no futuro.

We debate the main concepts and arguments that guided the research choices and reflections in the book O Brasil: Território e Sociedade no início do século 21, written in conjunction with Milton Santos. The article corresponds to a presentation given at the workshop “Cities in the Amazon: 15 years of reflection - cities, networks and urban environments”, at the Study and Research Center for Urban Centers in the Brazilian Amazon (NEPECAB), Federal University of Amazonas, in 2010. Firstly, our intention was to briefly characterize the political and epistemological scenario of the 1990s, when the field research for the book was carried out. Secondly, we dealt with the idea of occupied territory, the underlying concept of the project, its genesis and later happenings. The third point covers the issue of totality and its parts, or, in other words, socio-spatial formation and the regions, as well as the necessity to develop a greater theory and a lesser theory, at the same time we suggest a theory of mediations to outline an overall picture of the country. Fourthly, we explain the analytical plan and the synthetic plan that define the structure of the book and the methodological and operational challenges faced during the research process. Finally, we reflect on the intrinsic relationships between method and policy, both in the interpretation of the present and in the recognition of future tendencies.
