La teoría sociológica y la comunidad: clásicos y contemporáneos tras las huellas de la “buena sociedad”

Abstract

Este artículo ofrece una perspectiva panorámica, aunque necesariamente incompleta, sobre la teorización sociológica acerca de la “comunidad”, un concepto sociológico fundamental (en sí mismo, o en el contexto del par dicotómico que integra con otro concepto, el de “sociedad”), desde los clásicos de la disciplina hasta hoy. Sacrificando profundidad para ganar a cambio amplitud y perspectiva histórica, se sobrevuela primero el pensamiento sobre la comunidad de algunos clásicos (como Ferdinand Tönnies, Max Weber y Émile Durkheim) y luego el de Talcott Parsons. Luego, de manera más detallada, se analizan las concepciones de comunidad presentes en dos autores más recientes, Michel Maffesoli y Zygmunt Bauman. Este ejercicio, por un lado, se orienta a detectar las principales metamorfosis del concepto durante casi un siglo y medio, observando en los diferentes autores sus oscilaciones entre usos tipológico-científicos, históricos y utópico-políticos de la comunidad. Por otro lado, al final, lanza algunas preguntas acerca de la (¿inextricable?) relación entre la sociología y los compromisos normativos.

This article offers a panoramic (though necessarily incomplete) overview of the sociological theorization around “community”. As we shall argue, this has been a fundamental sociological concept in itself, as well as in the context of the dichotomous pair that it integrates with «society». Sacrificing depth for breadth in order to gain wideness and a historical perspective, in the first place, we glimpse into classical theorizations around “community” (by Ferdinand Tönnies, Max Weber and Émile Durkheim) and, in the second place, we refer to Talcott Parsons perspective on the matter. After that, we analyze, in more detail, the conceptions of “community” of two contemporary scholars, Michel Maffesoli and Zygmunt Bauman. The article, on the one hand, seeks to identify major transformations of the concept during its nearly one and a half century, looking for the oscillations between typological-scientific, historical and political-utopical uses of community in different authors. On the other hand, towards the end, we pose some questions about the intractable relationship between sociology and normative commitments.
