Democracy to come: The Importance of Otherness as different Ways of Living

Abstract

In this paper, I will analyze Derrida s concept of democracy to come in light of his notion of alterity. I will, like Derrida, argue that the democratic experience is aporetic, insofar as it erodes the basis of our living together in a political community. Thus, I will emphasize the historical dimension of the creation of meaning. In contrast with readings of this notion that could be labeled as idealizing, I will defend the view that what is to come? is the arrival of the other, here and now. Lastly, I will address questions pertaining to the position that different forms of life occupy in contemporary societies; in particular, in Latin American countries.
