Una aplicación de la filosofía del arte de Danto a los problemas de la demarcación entre la narrativa literaria y la “meramente” histórica

Abstract

Arthur Danto formula una definición filosófica de la esencia de la obra de arte en términos de tener un tema (ser representacional) y un modo de presentación (para las meras representaciones exhibir su manera de presentarse no es esencial). Mi tesis será que la segunda condición tendrá consecuencias para la diferencia entre narrativa histórica y narrativa literaria involucrando que: 1) la diferencia no reside en la corrección fáctica, tanto historia como literatura pueden referir con verdad. 2) la diferencia tampoco residirá en el uso de recursos retóricos para provocar actitudes en el auditorio. La filosofía del arte de Danto permite astutamente distinguir a la literatura de la representación histórica pues solo para la primera los recursos son mencionados y no sólo usados. Lamentablemente la distinción esencial entre literatura e historia alcanzada no será la deseada por la práctica historiográfica; será de relevancia exclusiva para la filosofía del arte y no para la filosofía de la historia.

Arthur Danto formulates a philosophical definition of the essence of the art work in terms of to have a subject (theme) and a mode of presentation. My thesis is that the second condition will offer a smart strategy in favor of the difference between historical narrative and literary narrative. This criterion avoids considering 1) to appeal to factual correction, given that both can truly refer to reality, 2) the use of rhetorical and poetics resources in order to provoke certain reactions in the audience is something that both kind of narrative always do. The difference is that literature but not history not only uses but mentions those resources. The article will show that this essential distinction between history and literature will not be the distinction by historians. Even more, this distinction will be only relevant for philosophy of arts and not for philosophy of history.
