Libertad y responsabilidad: Notas sobre la controversia entre Hannah Arendt e Isaiah Berlin en torno al Juicio de Eichmann en Jerusalén

Abstract

Hannah Arendt e Isaiah Berlin fueron dos intelectuales judíos contemporáneos que se enfrentaron filosófica y políticamente a la experiencia totalitaria. Las posiciones que ambos asumieron sobre la actuación del sionismo durante y después de la guerra y las profundas críticas que dirigieron hacia la asimilación judía dan cuenta de la existencia de una serie de preocupaciones compartidas desarrolladas a lo largo de la década de los 40 y que, en cierto modo, pueden ser leídas como la antesala de las profundas divergencias en torno al concepto de libertad analizado a fines de los 50 y principios de los 60. Finalmente, el evidente –aunque no abierto– diálogo entre ambos pensadores se acentúa con la profunda controversia que ocasiona la publicación de Arendt Eichmann en Jerusalén en 1963. En este marco, el objetivo de nuestro trabajo es reconstruir la polémica que se desarrolla entre los dos intelectuales en torno al enjuiciamiento de Eichmann y el peso que allí adquiere el concepto de responsabilidad a la luz de las nociones de libertad que ambos pensadores elaboran.

Hannah Arendt and Isaiah Berlin were two contemporary Jewish intellectuals who confronted the totalitarian experience philosophically and politically. The positions that both took on the performance of Zionism during and after the war and the deep criticisms they directed towards Jewish assimilation, show the existence of a series of shared concerns developed throughout the decade of the 40s and that, in a way, can be read as the prelude to the deep divergences around the concept of Freedom analyzed in the late 50s and early 60s. Finally, the obvious –though not open– dialogue between the two thinkers is accentuated by the deep controversy caused by the publication of Arendt Eichmann in Jerusalem in 1963. In this framework, the objective of our work is to reconstruct the controversy that was developed between the two intellectuals around the prosecution of Eichmann and the weight that there acquires the concept of responsibility in light of the notions of freedom that both thinkers elaborated.
