Looking back to move forward: rock art research in Argentina (2015-2019)

Abstract

This chapter reviews all the major advances of rock art research in Argentina from 2015 to 2019. We have made every effort to gather all the available published literature and, as a result, a total of 241 publications have been reviewed. Out of these a selection has been made in order to provide an accurate overview of all the researched regions and topics. No subject has been purposely excluded from this review, and its potential absence should only be related to a lack of access to the relevant publications. As in the previous chapters in this book series, Argentina is subdivided into broad areas (see Figure 1: I) North-West and North-East, II) West-Centre and Cuyo, II) Pampa, III) Patagonia; these have already been described by Fiore (2008). A fifth section summarises information about the presentation of contents related to Argentinian rock art in congresses, museums, national parks and dissemination/education textbooks. As in previous reviews, key terms such as ‘motif’, ‘element’, ‘representative’, ‘figurative’, ‘abstract’, etc. are quoted here exactly as used by each author in their text/s.
