Plantas para “volar”, “enfermar” o “transformarse”: Etnobotánica del chamanismo chorote

Abstract

Se identifican las especies vegetales con que interactúan los chamanes chorote. Se analizan y discuten modalidades, procedimientos y finalidades de su empleo con referencia a sus significados en rituales de iniciación, precautorios, propiciatorios, terapéuticos y de daño. Los datos fueron obtenidos de primera mano con chamanes y otros indígenas chorote del Noreste de la provincia de Salta con quienes se coleccionaron especímenes vegetales de referencia. Se registran 95 taxones vegetales y 1 hongo con 166 referencias totales a prácticas y/o al ideario shamánico. Las principales categorías de interacción planta-shamán identificadas fueron relativas al daño (56,34%), como protección o refugio (47,28 %), instrumentales (25,15 %), en rituales propiciatorios (15,9 %), terapéuticos (12,7 %) y preventivos (11,7 %). La dimensión religiosa que adquiere la diversidad y complejidad de estas interacciones constituye una evidencia de la persistencia del vínculo inextricable entre los chorote y el bosque chaqueño.

The plant species with which Chorote shamans interact are identified. Modalities, procedures and purposes of their use are analyzed and discussed here with reference to their meanings in initiation, precautionary, propitiatory, therapeutic and harm rituals. Data was first-hand obtained from shamans and other Chorote indians of the Northeast of the Salta province with whom reference plant specimens were collected. Ninety five plant taxa and a fungus with 166 total references to shamanic practices and ideology, were registered. The main categories of plant-shaman interaction identified were related to damage (56,34%), as protection or refuge (47,28%), instrumental (25,15%), and in propitiatory (15,9%), therapeutic (12,7%) and preventive rituals (11,7%). The religious dimension that acquires the diversity and complexity of these interactions is evidence of the persistence of the inextricable link between the Chorote and the Chaco forest.
