Los gallegos en Caras y Caretas durante las primeras dos décadas del siglo XX

Abstract

Pese a la enorme importancia numérica de la inmigración gallega en la Argentina, son escasos los estudios específicos sobre sus representaciones en el imaginario colectivo del país. Es un lugar común referirse al estereotipo negativo con que fue recubierta la condición de gallego entre los años finales del siglo XIX y las dos primeras décadas del siguiente. El reverso del estereotipo positivo (definido por la honradez inocente, la bondad, la contracción al trabajo) caracterizó a los nativos de Galicia como burdos, torpes e ignorantes. En parte por eso, una de las representaciones que la sociedad local no asumió fue la de tantos gallegos y gallegas intelectuales (editores, escritores, traductores, artistas y profesionales varios), algunos de ellos fundamentales para la cultura vernácula. Sin embargo, diversos soportes evidencian una tensión entre las imágenes estereotípicas y la matizada riqueza de los cientos de miles de individuos que conforman aquella inmigración. Ese es el caso de la revista ilustrada Caras y Caretas entre 1898 y 1923. El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar la forma en que esta les otorgó a los miembros del grupo galaico características más acordes con la heterogénea naturaleza de su condición humana, al tiempo que revelaba al lector argentino una interesante cantidad de aspectos de la sociedad gallega, hasta entonces mayormente desconocida o reducida a una imagen simplista. Es interesante destacar como ello supuso una revalorización tanto de Galicia como de su comunidad emigrada en Argentina difícilmente parangonable en la prensa argentina del primer cuarto del siglo XX.

In spite of the importance of the Galician immigration in Argentina in terms of numbers, there is not enough research done on the representations of this community in the Argentinean collective imaginary. Negative stereotypes about Galicians at the time are well known. In Argentina, the opposite to the positive stereotype (defined by innocent honesty, goodness, and dedication to work) characterizes Galicians as rude, clumsy, and uneducated. Partially because of this, it has been difficult to the Argentinean society to acknowledge the many Galician intellectuals (editors, writers, translators, artists and diverse professionals), some of who have been fundamental for the vernacular culture. However, diverse cultural expressions make visible the tension between the stereotyped images and the nuanced richness of the collective made up by hundreds of thousands of Galician immigrants. This is the case of the illustrated magazine Caras y Caretas between 1898 and 1923. The goal of this work is to analyze the way in which this magazine showed a more realistic repertoire of characteristics of the heterogenous group of Galician immigrants, while presenting to the Argentinean reader a number of interesting aspects of the Galician society, either ignored or reduced to a simplistic image until then. Importantly, this supposed a revalorization of Galicia and of the Galician community in Argentina hard to match in the Argentinean press during the first quarter of the twentieth century.
