Fronteras en Historia Ambiental: Un ejercicio de praxis multidisciplinar

Abstract

Este trabajo explora y discute el concepto de frontera en historia ambiental latino-americana. La historia ambiental conjuga diferentes disciplinas y métodos de estudio, en diferentes épocas históricas, por lo que se torna relevante pensar en los desafíos de investigación en esta área. La perspectiva multidimensional del constructo de frontera es un campo fértil para ese diálogo. Analizamos las reflexiones resultantes de las ponencias y las mesas de trabajo presentadas en el Seminario Fronteras en Historia Ambiental, realizado en el Centro de Investigaciones en Geografía Ambiental (UNAM) en Morelia, México, el 14 y 15 de noviembre de 2019. Como resultados, discutimos el campo de la historia ambiental como frontera de conocimiento; proponemos cuatro categorías de fronteras y discutimos la relevancia de sentipensar las fronteras. Como reflexiones finales presentamos algunas características inherentes a las fronteras.

The concept of frontier goes beyond the modern sense of borderline, a separation between States; it is a polysemic concept. Various "frontiers" have been widely studied from geography, anthropology, history, among other disciplines. In this work, we focus on the study of frontiers in Environmental History, a field of study that places greater emphasis on the role of nature as a protagonist in historical events. We analyze the reflections derived from the Seminar "Frontiers in Environmental History," held on November 14th and 15th, 2019, at the Center for Environmental Geography Research (CIGA) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Morelia Unit. The Seminar brought together researchers with different disciplinary backgrounds and approaches to the theme-title of the event. We first discuss Environmental History as a frontier of knowledge by itself and the relevance of sentipensar (feeling-thinking) the frontiers. We then explore the Seminar's research, identifying four major analysis perspectives -cultural, biophysical-ecological, agricultural, and subjective frontiers-; finally, we reflect on some general characteristics of frontiers. We conclude that frontiers as an object of study in Environmental History allow analyzing complex situations reflecting on frontiers as spaces for encounters, relationships, influences, and feelings.
