Percepción y cuerpo en la filosofía de Walter Benjamin

Abstract

En el presente trabajo analizamos la lectura de Walter Benjamin sobre los problemas de la percepción y del cuerpo tomando como punto de partida la discusión en torno a las modificaciones de la percepción humana hacia fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Consideramos que para la comprensión de este tema y de su vínculo con la técnica en la filosofía de Benjamin es preciso el estudio de algunos fragmentos antropológicos tempranos. En estos textos, el autor examina el carácter dúctil e histórico de las disposiciones de la percepción y traza la relación entre cuerpo y técnica. Como resultado, Benjamin forja una revisión del concepto de cuerpo en términos de cuerpo sentiente de la humanidad. Los aspectos fundamentales de esta idea de cuerpo reaparecen en sus escritos de fines de la década de 1920 como cuerpo nuevo y cuerpo colectivo, claves para esclarecer su incipiente materialismo antropológico. Desde el recorrido propuesto sostenemos que la ductilidad de las disposiciones de la percepción permite a Benjamin redefinir las comprensiones y conceptos de cuerpo, humanidad, naturaleza y técnica.

In this article we analyse Walter Benjamin’s view of perception and the body. The starting point is the discussion on the modifications of human perception during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In order to shed some light on the relation between the notions of perception and body and Benjamin’s notion of technique, a study of some of his early anthropological fragments is required. In these texts, the author examines the ductility and the historical character of perceptual dispositions, and traces the relationship between body and technique. As a result, Benjamin coins a renewed concept of the body in terms of the lived body of humankind. The main features of the notion of lived body of humankind reappear in his late 1920s writings, now referred to as new body and collective physis –both of which are crucial to explain his incipient anthropological materialism. Following this line of thought, we argue that the ductility of perceptual dispositions allows Benjamin to redefine the notions of the body, humankind, nature and technique.
