Cartas franciscanas colectivas. El Epistolario de fray Toribio de Benavente Motolinía

Abstract

Las cartas individuales y colectivas enviadas desde Nueva España por los frailes misioneros durante el periodo de la evangelización conforma un archivo único, aun no recopilado en su totalidad, disperso por distintas bibliotecas y colecciones del mundo, y aguarda un intento de sistematización y análisis que se detenga en la relevancia no solo de la información que brinda sino, también, de su posicionamiento enunciativo. En este artículo, me ocupo de las diez cartas colectivas en las que participa el fraile franciscano Toribio de Benavente Motolinía junto a otros franciscanos, todas destinadas al emperador y al virrey. En ellas, la denuncia de las injusticias contra los indígenas, la desidia de otros religiosos que atenta contra la evangelización, la defensa de la tarea franciscana en el “Nuevo Mundo” y la petición al rey de más presencia e involucramiento son el motor principal de un epistolario tan interesante y polémico como fundamental para el estudio de la literatura colonial.

The individual and collective letters sent from Nova Spain by the missionary friars during the period of evangelization conform a unique archive which has not been wholly gathered and is scattered around different libraries and collections across the world and therefore it is not yet systematized or analyzed in a manner that focuses on its relevance, the information it provides and its enunciative positioning. In this article I analize the ten collective letters sent to the emperor and viceroy in which Franciscan Friar Toribio de Benavente Motolinia participates together with other friars. In these letters, the denunciation of the injustices against the indigenous people, the apathy of the religious people that goes against the evangelization, the defens of the Franciscan work in the New World and the king's petition for more presence and involvement are the main engines of a controversial and interesting collection of letters which is fundamental for studying colonial literature.
