Cosas de blancos entre los ''indios'': Forma y razón de su intercambio y de su uso en Chiquitos (siglos XVI a XIX)

Abstract

Una serie peculiar de objetos de metal y de vidrio que los europeos trajeron a América fue motivo de atracción e interés entre los nativos y por eso su principal medio de vinculación e intercambio. En Chiquitos (actual oriente boliviano), el encanto por cuchillos, agujas, anzuelos y chaquiras perduró mucho después de los primeros contactos aunque en contextos que fueron cambiando conforme lo hacían las relaciones entre indígenas y blancos. Este artículo es, en primer lugar, una historia de esa relación entre los siglos xvi y xix. Además, es una descripción de las distintas formas de circulación en que dichos objetos estuvieron involucrados. Por último, es una indagación sobre los fundamentos de tan persistente encanto y tan curiosa singularidad de las cosas de los blancos entre los indígenas para los que las clásicas explicaciones instrumentalistas, tecnológicas y económicas resultan insuficientes.

When Europeans arrived in America, they brought a particular series of glass and metal objects with them that both attracted and fascinated the natives. As a result, these things became their principal mean of connection and exchange. In Chiquitos (today, eastern Bolivia), the fascination caused by knives, needles, fishhooks and beads lasted long after the first contacts, though in contexts that varied as the relations between indigenous peoples and whites changed. This article is, firstly, a history of the relationship built up over the 16th to 19th centuries between natives and whites through these objects. It is also a description of the different forms of traffic in which the above-mentioned objects were involved. Finally, it is an investigation of the foundations of this ongoing captivation and curious obsession in indigenous society with white material culture for the understanding of which classic, instrumentalist, technological and economic explanations do not seem to be adequate.
