La visibilización estadística de los afrodescendientes en la Argentina en perspectiva histórica

Abstract

En el año 2010 Argentina se sumó a la ronda de censos con medición étnica para los afrodescendientes. Sin embargo esta población no siempre formó parte de los registros censales. Por el contrario, fue excluida de los mismos bajo el argumento de su baja importancia numérica en el territorio nacional o por las dificultades técnicas para su medición. Este artículo examina en clave histórica la presencia de la población negra en los censos nacionales y la lectura que el Estado hizo de la misma.También analiza la incorporación de la pregunta por el auto-reconocimiento de los afrodescendientes en el último censo nacional de 2010, sus significados desde la mirada de las organizaciones afro y los alcances y desafíos de dicha inclusión.

In 2010 Argentina joined the round of censuses with ethnic measurement for Afro-descendants. For more than a century this population was not part of the census records. On the contrary, this population was excluded from the measurements on the basis of technical dificulties or that its number was too low to take into account.This inclusion is of great importance in a country where, at the time of constructing its national identity, alterity and cultural heterogeneity were combated and neutralized. This article examines in historically the presence of the black population in the national censuses of 1869 to 1947 and the reading that the State made of it. It also analyzes the incorporation of the question for the self-recognition for Afrodescendants in the last national census of 2010, its meanings, its scope and the new challenges of that such inclusion represent, especially for sfro organizations. This article argues that statistical visibility is a step towards the political visibility of Afro-descendants, who have capitalized the results of the census to become political actors of the national reality
