La diversión de toros en Buenos Aires: un análisis de los vínculos entre recreación y ciudad a fines del período colonial

Abstract

En la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, la ciudad de Buenos Aires vivió un crecimiento vertiginoso en términos demográficos y políticos que impulsó un proceso de diversificación de los espacios de la ciudad. En 1790 se inició la construcción de una plaza de toros en el barrio de Montserrat. No obstante, su emplazamiento desató discusiones entre los agentes políticos de la época respecto a la función del ocio y su rol en el control social y disputas que involucraron a los vecinos de la plaza y a sus expectativas en torno a las características que iba cobrando el barrio. Analizaremos el emplazamiento del circo de toros y los conflictos que generó, para repensar las problemáticas derivadas del crecimiento político, económico y demográfico de la ciudad desde la perspectiva del ocio y su función sociopolítica e incorporar la variable espacial a las discusiones político-económicas de la época.

In the second half of the 18th century the city of Buenos Aires experienced a rapid growth in demographic and political terms that triggered a process of diversification of the spaces of the city. In 1790 the construction of a bullring in the neighborhood of Montserrat began. However, its location unleashed discussions among political actors of the time about the show and its role in social control. At the same time the residents of the square were involved in the conflict because of the negative impact that the bulls hauled to the neighborhood. The aim of this paper is to analyze the site of the Circus of bulls and the conflicts generated, to rethink the issues arising from the political, economic and demographic growth of the city from the perspective of Recreational and socio-political function and incorporate the spatial variable to the political and economic discussions of the time.
