Chronicles of the Hostile Sun, de Dionne Brand: Ars poética de una política de localización

Abstract

"Chronicles of the Hostile Sun" (1984), el cuarto poemario de la poeta trinitense Dionne Brand es marcadamente político, pues evoca la revolución de Granada que ocurrió entre 1979-1983 y la ocupación estadounidense de la isla durante la operación denominada "Urgent Fury" en octubre de 1983. Es posible analizar este libro desde la interacción entre registro (diario) y poesía, y la reflexión que surge sobre la función del lenguaje poético frente al fracaso político. En ese sentido, el propósito del presente artículo es analizar la construcción metapoética que lleva a cabo Brand en este poemario a partir del concepto de política de localización, desarrollado por la geógrafa feminista Gillian Rose, inspirado en la poeta Adrianne Rich. Es desde allí que se puede construir un ars poética en esta obra de Brand, que se apoya en la búsqueda de pathos para construir hermandad, empatía, y cuyo fracaso quedará emparentado con la muerte de los ideales revolucionarios.

Chronicles of the Hostile Sun (1984),the fourth poetry collection by the Trinidadian poet Dionne Brand, is centered around politics, since it deals with the Grenada revolution during 1979-1983 and the American occupation during the operation “Urgent Fury”, in October 1983. It is possible to analyze this book focusing on the interaction between register (the diary format) and poetry, as well as the reflection about the function of poetic language amid political failure. Thus, the purpose of this article is to analyze the metapoetic construction carried by Brand in this book using the concept of politics of location, developed by the feminist geographer Gillian Rose and inspired by the poet Adrienne Rich. It is from that perspective that one can construct an ars poetica in this book by Brand, one that is built upon the use of pathos to create fraternity, empathy, whose failure is connected with the death of revolutionary ideals.
