Templos para la nación: la financiación estatal de obras edilicias eclesiásticas en Argentina (1862-1916)

Abstract

El presente artículo explora la financiación por parte del Estado nacional argentino de edificaciones o refacciones de templos católicos en el siglo XIX, expresión del vasto consenso que existió en el seno de la élite política en torno a la relevancia de la religión para la “civilización del país”. Para ello se analizan fundamentalmente los debates parlamentarios y las memorias del Departamento de Culto, que en sus anexos documentales suelen incluir informes de los obispos. El texto busca dar cuenta de las razones que invocaban legisladores y ministros para destinar fondos a la edificación o refacción de iglesias, los criterios con que los distribuían y los intereses, a menudo conflictivos, que entraban en juego a la hora de definir las asignaciones.

The aim of this article was to investigate the funding of the building and renovation of Catholic temples by the Argentinian state in the nineteenth century, an expression of the vast consensus that existed within the political elite regarding the relevance of religion for the “civilization of the country”. For this purpose, the parliamentary debates and the annual reports of the Departamento de Culto, which usually include those of the bishops in their documentary annexes, are thoroughly analyzed. The study seeks to account for the reasons invoked by legislators and ministers to allocate funds for the construction and renovation of churches, the criteria used for fund distribution, and the often-conflicting interests that came into play when deciding the allocation of funds.
