Versiones de Rousseau: Das Erdbeben in Chili o el retorno a la naturaleza como palimpsesto literario

Abstract

Las fuentes literarias del tópico del “retorno a la naturaleza” —célebremente narrado por Heinrich v. Kleist en Das Erdbeben in Chili (1807)— no han sido hasta el momento suficientemente estudiadas. En el siguiente trabajo proponemos dos importantes precedentes filológicos: los Beyträge zur geheimen Geschichte des menschlichen Verstandes und Herzens (1770) de C.M. Wieland y la escena elaborada por Goethe en Capítulo Quinto, Libro IV, de la novela Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (1795). A partir de estas referencias, Kleist elaborará un abordaje singular de las problemáticas intelectuales e ideológicas asociadas a las diferentes versiones del tópico que le permitirá a su vez llevar adelante una lectura singular de la obra de Rousseau en el contexto posterior a la Revolución Francesa.

The literary sources of the “back-to-nature” theme —as it is famously deployed in Heinrich v. Kleist´s Das Erdbeben in Chili (1807) — haven´t been yet enough studied. In the present essay we propose two important philological precedents, recognizable in C. M. Wieland´s Beyträge zur geheimen Geschichte des menschlichen Verstandes und Herzens (1770) and in Chapter Five, Book IV, from J. W. Goethe´s Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (1795). Our main thesis is that Kleist´s literary approach to the intellectual and ideological issues involved in the different versions of the topic displays an unusual reading of J-J. Rousseau´s work in the aftermath of the French Revolution.
