El Fogón, periódico criollo: tiempos fundacionales, sociabilidad y reformulaciones sobre el criollismo finisecular rioplatense (1895-1896)

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la primera publicación tradicionalista del Río de la Plata. En septiembre de 1895 salió a la luz el primer número de El Fogón, un periódico criollo que se editaba en Montevideo y aparecía semanalmente. La revista estuvo vinculada a la agrupación gaucha “Sociedad Criolla” que había fundado poco tiempo antes el Dr. Elías Regules. Si bien El Fogón contaba con distintas secciones, nos interesa reparar aquí en las noticias, las cartas abiertas y las reseñas de actividades que evidencian un entramado vincular en gestación. El criollismo, la figura del gaucho, su reivindicación y las tradiciones rurales fueron tópicos que se definieron y redefinieron desde las páginas de la revista. Se pretende contribuir al estudio de los tiempos fundacionales del tradicionalismo desde la perspectiva de la historia socio-cultural, focalizando más en el asociacionismo en ciernes que en las derivaciones literarias de ese movimiento.

This article analyzes the first traditionalist publication of the Río de la Plata. In September 1895, the first issue of El Fogón, a criollo magazine that was published in Montevideo and appeared weekly, came to light. The magazine was linked to the gaucho group “Sociedad Criolla” (Criolla Society) that Dr. Elías Regules had founded just a short time before. Although El Fogón had different sections, we are interested in paying attention to the news, the open letters and the activity reviews that show a link network in gestation. The criollism, the figure of the gaucho, his vindication and rural traditions were topics that were defined and redefined through the pages of the magazine. The article intends to contribute to the study of traditionalism foundational times from a socio-cultural history perspective, focusing more on budding associationism than on the literary derivations of that movement.
