Los apotegmas de Gorgo, la espartana

Abstract

En este trabajo presento algunas observaciones sobre las mujeres espartanas cuya situación siempre ha sido considerada más favorable en comparación con la de otras mujeres griegas. Para ello me concentro en el análisis de las sentencias atribuidas a Gorgo y transmitidas por Plutarco en Apotegmas laconios 240D1-E11, donde esta es presentada como una encarnación del ideal espartano de la femineidad: la mujer cuya fortaleza física y educación la preparan para convertirse en madre de los soldados. En primer lugar, formulo algunas observaciones sobre la situación de las mujeres en Grecia antigua, particularmente en Esparta; luego, expongo algunas precisiones sobre Apotegmas laconios; finalmente, ofrezco una traducción de las sentencias de Gorgo, acompañada de un breve comentario.

In this paper I present some remarks about Spartan women, whose situation was always considered better and more favourable than that of the other women in Ancient Greece. In order to do this, I will concentrate on Gorgo’s apothegms preserved by Plutarch in Sayings of Spartans 240D1-E11, where she appears as an incarnation of the Spartan feminine ideal: the woman whose strength and education prepare her to become the mother of soldiers. First, I will make some observations about the situation of women in Greece, especially in Sparta. Then, I will introduce some remarks about Sayings of Spartans. Finally, I offer a translation of Gorgo’s apothegms followed by a brief commentary.
