Auxilios, costuras y limosnas. Una aproximación a las estrategias de vida de mujeres en la ciudad de Buenos Aires: 1852-1870

Abstract

Este artículo se pregunta por las experiencias sociales de mujeres pobres y trabajadoras que residieron en Buenos Aires entre 1852 y 1870, y que en distintos momentos de sus vidas (indigencia, ancianidad, pérdida de derechos, enfermedad, viudez, entre otras) demandaron la obtención de algún auxilio, beneficio o derecho ante autoridades o benefactoras. Al centrar la atención en estas trabajadoras, que se presentaron como desprovistas de figuras de tutela masculina, es posible comenzar a reconocer cómo sus formas de vida y trabajo, envolvieron nociones propias sobre lo justo, la negociaciones y reinterpretaciones de un mundo conjeturado por autoridades y patrones. A su vez, al rastrear sus trayectorias es dable dar cuenta de sus márgenes de acción, repensando de este modo las singulares maneras en que se gestó su agencia histórica en un contexto donde se sentaron legalmente las bases de la inferioridad femenina.

This paper asks about the social experiences of poor and working women who lived in Buenos Aires between 1852 and 1870, and that at different times of their lives (indigence, old age, loss of rights, illness, widowhood, among others) demanded the obtaining of any help, benefit or right before authorities or benefactors. By focusing attention on these workers, who were presented as devoid of male guardians, it is possible to begin to recognize how their ways of life and work, involved notions of fairness, negotiations and reinterpretations of a world conjectured by authorities and masters In turn, by tracking their trajectories it is possible to give an account of their margins of action, thus rethinking the unique ways in which their historical agency was developed in a context where the foundations of female inferiority were legally laid.
