“De nuestro corresponsal exclusivo”: Cobertura internacional y expansión informativa en los diarios de Buenos Aires de fines del Siglo XIX

Abstract

Partiendo de la premisa de que el corresponsal remoto y el telégrafo submarino fueron fuerzas decisivas en la expansión informativa que caracterizó a la prensa de fines del siglo XIX, este trabajo ofrece una ponderación del alcance efectivo de las corresponsalías “exclusivas”. Propone, por un lado, considerar un repertorio más amplio de elementos, entre los que cuentan figuras periodísticas de estatus más ambiguo, y a menudo anónimo; por otro, se interroga por vehículos de distribución informativa otros que el telégrafo transatlántico. De este modo, la narrativa propuesta revisa críticamente la versión de los propios diarios - y de sus observadores más allegados - sobre sus prácticas de acceso a la información, para proponer que la combinación de recursos que confluyeron en la expansión del horizonte de noticias era a la vez más limitada y más diversa de lo que sugería aquel diagnóstico.

Assuming that the submarine cable and the international correspondent were decisive forces in the informative expansion of the late XIXth century press, this study offers an assessment of the effective role played by “exclusive” correspondents in that process. On the one hand, it explores the contribution made by a larger universe of journalists, including those with a more ambiguous (and often anonymous) status; on the other, it brings to the picture vehicles of distribution other that the transatlantic cable. Thus, the proposed narrative critically revises the version offered by the newspapers themselves - and their friendlier observers - about the practices involved in the newly expanded access to information. In doing so, it shows that the combination of resources involved in the making of a new informative horizon was at the same time more limited and more diverse than the original diagnosis suggested.
