Poggio Bracciolini y la cuestión del intelectual laico

Abstract

En el presente artículo procuro analizar la cuestión del “sabio laico” en textos de Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459). Para ello, me he concentrado, principalmente, en su búsqueda de preceptos éticos para las relaciones del intelectual varón y las mujeres, o dicho en otras palabras, en cómo Poggio tercia en una antigua disputa entre los hombres acerca de la existencia o no de una oposición entre la búsqueda de la propia virtud y las mujeres. En primer lugar, me focalicé en la encrucijada del sabio entre dos formas de vida: el celibato y el matrimonio. Estos son presentados como los dos “caminos” a los cuales “esta época nuestra suele entregarse”. En segundo lugar, atiendo a otras formas distintas de vida que los textos atribuyen a los habitantes de los baños termales de Baden y a algunas poblaciones de Asia. Estas otras formas de encausar la relación entre el hombre y la mujer se presentan como una otredad, como un “ellos” frente a un “nosotros”. Mi hipótesis es que todas estas distintas formas de vida son diversas respuestas posibles a una serie de preguntas que la textualidad poggiana plantea y deja abiertas para que el lector en última instancia decida, preguntas que en su conjunto constituyen un cuestionamiento general sobre el ser humano y su cultura en aquellos años del Quattrocento italiano.

This article aims at analysing the secular wiseman matter in the writings by Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459). For this purpose, the focal point has been placed on his search for the ethical precepts connected to the relationship between the male intellectual and women, that is to say, the way in which Poggio mediates in an an ancient dispute among men over the existence of a conflict between the quest for one's own virtue and women. Firstly, the wiseman's crossroads between two different ways of living, celibacy and marriage, is brought into focus. They are both presented as two possible “ways”, to which “our current time devotes itself ”. Secondly, the center of attention shifts to other kinds of ways of living, attributed to Baden thermal baths and other Asian populations, according to different sources. These other ways to steer the relationship between man and woman are presented as otherness, as “them” against “us”. This article hypothesizes that all these different ways of living are possible answers to a set of questions raised by Poggio Bracciolini's writings, ques tions which are left out for the reader to decide, and which, as a whole, establish an overall questioning on the human being and his culture during the Italian Quattrocento's years.
