Hans Kellner, cuatro décadas getting the story crooked

Abstract

La contribución específica de Hans Kellner a la Nueva Filosofía de la Historia se dirige a dar cuenta del revival de la narrativa a partir de los 80 en términos de un revival de la retórica. Sus relecturas de los textos históricos, metahistóricos, literarios y filosóficos nos invitan a apreciar las estrategias retóricas implicadas en ellos, desplegando aquello que habilitan o imposibilitan decir acerca del pasado. Kellner invita a eludir el planteo fundacionista que se ciñe a la cuestión de la validez epistémica del texto, sin caer por ello en la actitud determinista lingüística que fija las estrategias discursivas en tanto estructuras artificiosas y distorsivas de la realidad. Kellner nos desafía a abandonar la metáfora de la distorsión para caracterizar la relación entre representación y realidad. Si en cuanto filósofxs de la historia nos interesa trazar líneas de continuidad y comunidad en la indagación historiográfica, debemos enfocar en sus fuentes retóricas más que en la evidencia documental o la experiencia del pasado cuyo rasgo manifiesto es la fragmentariedad. Su propuesta promueve que nos focalicemos, por un lado, en las innumerables elecciones tomadas entre las diversas modalidades de conocimiento disponibles. Por el otro, nos advierte de la ansiedad provocada por dicha elección en contra de otras opciones descartadas que podrían habernos hecho pensar las cosas de otra manera.

Hans Kellner’s specific contribution to the New Philosophy of History lies in his account of the revival of narrative for history (since the 80’s) in terms of the revival of rhetoric. His re-readings of historical, metahistorical, literary and philosophical texts are suggestions to appreciate the rhetoric strategies involved in them, through the revelation of what is permited and not permited to say about the past. Kellner invites us to avoid the kind of foundationist approach that is tied to the question of the epistemic value of historical text, but without falling in some linguistic determinism, that is, to think that rhetoric resources are no more than artificial and distortive structures of reality. Kellner challenges us to abandon the metaphor of distortion in the characterization of the relation between representation and reality. If as philosophers of history we are interested in drawing lines of continuity and community in the historiographical inquiry we must focus on its rhetorical sources rather than on documentary evidence or the experience of the past whose manifest trait is fragmentarity. His proposal promotes to focus, on one hand, on the innumerable choices made among the diverse modes of knowledge available to us. On the other, it warns us of the anxiety provoked by this choice against other discarded options that could have made us think things differently.
