Un "cacique culto" para defender el territorio comunal: Amaicha del valle (Tucumán, Argentina) a principios del siglo XX

Abstract

A principios del siglo XX la Comunidad de Amaicha aún sostenía un pleito por tierras que había comenzado a fines de la colonia. En aquel contexto, el cacique Timoteo Ayala llevó adelante distintas acciones orientadas a “asegurar el territorio”. En este trabajo, buscamos caracterizar el perfil y desempeño de dicho cacique. Uno de sus descendientes lo recuerda como el “cacique culto”; imagen que entendemos esconde las complejidades de su figura, así como de su articulación política y cultural en la escena local y más allá de ella, y que vale la pena desentrañar con relación al problema del territorio comunal.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Community of Amaicha still held a land lawsuit that had begun at the end of the colony. In that context, the cacique Timoteo Ayala carried on several actions aimed at “securing the territory”. In this paper, we seek to characterize the profile and performance of that cacique. One of his descendants remembers him as the “cacique culto”; image that we understand hides the complexities of its figure, as well as its political and cultural articulation in the local scene and beyond it, and that it is worth unraveling regarding the communal territory problem.
