The Silence After Defeat: The early post-war period for the former argentine soldiers of the Apostadero Naval Malvinas

Abstract

La posguerra de los ex-combatientes argentinos de Malvinas estuvo marcada por la soledad y el silencio. Ello no sólo por la voluntad de la Junta Militar de esconder a los testigos de la contienda y del pésimo accionar de las FF.AA. nacionales en las islas, sino también por la imposibilidad de la sociedad civil de lidiar con los costos de la derrota en una guerra que, en términos generales, había apoyado. A partir de estudio de la temprana posguerra de los civiles y militares que integraron el Apostadero Naval Malvinas -una unidad logística de la Armada- durante la contienda, busco demostrar cómo la ausencia de políticas estatales coherentes que abarcaran a los protagonistas del conflicto, dejó a los ex-combatientes solos frente a las marcas de la guerra. Así, en el capítulo pretendo reconstruir su retorno a los ámbitos de cotidianeidad previos a la guerra -desde sus hogares, entidades educativas, clubes de barrio, lugares de militancia, hasta la Marina-, con el objeto de identificar los diversos silencios que los miembros del Apostadero tuvieron que combatir tras la guerra.

The returns of Argentine veterans of the Malvinas War followed with loneliness and silence. Not only due to the decision of the military government to hide the witnesses from the fight and the bad performance of the national armed forces on the islands, but also because of the impossibility of civil society to deal with the costs of defeat in a war that, in general terms, it had supported. From the study of the early postwar period of the civilians and military that integrated the Apostadero Naval Malvinas—a naval unit—during the war, I seek to demonstrate how the absence of coherent state policies that encompassed the protagonists of the conflict left the veterans facing the marks of war in loneliness. Thus, in this chapter, I intend to reconstruct their returns to the areas of daily life—their homes, educational entities, neighborhood clubs, places of militancy, and the Navy—in order to identify the various silences that members of the Apostadero had to fight after the war.
