Intermediarios, movilidad y redes sociales de inmigrantes árabes en la Patagonia septentrional (1900-1955)

Abstract

En este artículo se analizan las relaciones entre los inmigrantes sirio-libaneses y los principales mediadores de sus experiencias migratorias en el sur de Río Negro y en el norte de Chubut, durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Se argumenta que los intermediarios más importantes fueron los connacionales árabes, aunque hubo actores indígenas, criollos y de otras nacionalidades que ejercieron mediaciones claves. Se identifica a los principales intermediarios en las trayectorias de los inmigrantes árabes, al mismo tiempo que se reconstruyen parcialmente sus redes de negocios y su alta movilidad. Se combina la metodología clásica de la crítica textual de fuentes primarias con el uso de herramientas de Sistemas de Información Geográfica y Análisis de Redes Sociales. Se concluye que las redes de negocios de los inmigrantes árabes estuvieron fuertemente cohesionadas al interior del grupo de connacionales, articulando territorialidades mercantiles amplias y conectando diferentes regiones. Si bien los árabes podían aparecer como un grupo migratorio disgregado, pudieron consolidar redes sociales que se mostraron eficaces y que favorecieron su acumulación económica.

This article analyzes the relations between Syrian-Lebanese immigrants and the main mediators of their migratory experiences in the south of Río Negro and in the north of Chubut, during the first half of the 20th century. It is argued that the most important intermediaries were the Arab nationals, although there were indigenous, Creole and other nationalities who performed key mediations. The main intermediaries in the trajectories of Arab immigrants are identified, at the same time that their business networks and high mobility are partially rebuilt. The classic methodology of textual criticism of primary sources is combined with the use of tools of Geographic Information Systems and Social Network Analysis. It is concluded that the business networks of Arab immigrants were strongly cohesive within the group of nationals, articulating broad mercantile territorialities and connecting different regions. Although the Arabs could appear as a dispersed migratory group, they were able to consolidate social networks that were effective and that favored their economic accumulation.
