Etnografía, comparación y teoría antropológica

Abstract

En este artículo examino las relaciones entre la etnografía y la comparación a fin de explorar las características que debería presentar la teoría a que apelamos los antropólogos para ser capaz de dar lugar a investigaciones que sean productivas en términos no sólo empíricos sino también teóricos. Contra las tendencias particularistas y antiteóricas que predominan en los centros hegemónicos de la disciplina, sugeriré que necesitamos disponer de teoría que nos permita pensar de una manera acorde con la ‘perspectiva etnográfica’, un entramado de orientaciones teóricas que implica conceptualizar a la vida social como variable, continua y protagonizada activamente por sujetos socialmente situados.

In this article I examine the relationships between ethnography and comparison in order to explore the characteristics that the theory deployed by anthropologists should have in order to give rise to empirically and theoretically productive investigations. Against the particularist and anti-theoretical tendencies that predominate currently in the hegemonic centers of the discipline, I will suggest that the sort of theory we need is one able to allow us to think in a manner consistent with the ‘ethnographic perspective’ —namely, a net of theoretical orientations that implies conceptualizing social life as variable, continuous and actively driven by socially situated subjects.
