Reflexiones en torno a la dimensión moral del mal radical y la banalidad del mal en el pensamiento arendtiano

Abstract

El presente trabajo se centra en el análisis de las nociones arendtianas de mal radical y banalidad del mal con el objetivo de tomar posicionamiento en el debate aún abierto respecto a la complementariedad u oposición de ambas concepciones del mal en el marco de la obra de Hannah Arendt. La literatura al respecto es muy amplia, sin embargo, la gran mayoría de los estudios críticos realizan un abordaje multidimensional del problema del mal en el pensamiento arendtiano o no especifican cuál es la dimensión de análisis que estructura el trabajo crítico. Esta investigación, en cambio, se posiciona desde una perspectiva moral y los alcances de sus conclusiones se circunscriben a dicha dimensión de análisis. La dificultad que debe enfrentarse es que el problema del mal y la cuestión moral no son temas abordados por Arendt de forma directa, sino que son contenidos transversales que deben rastrearse en la totalidad de su obra. Se concluye que, desde una perspectiva moral, el mal radical y la banalidad del mal no son nociones excluyentes entre sí, sino que fungen como expresiones que remiten a dos niveles diferentes, uno más general y estructural (mal radical) y el otro vinculado con el comportamiento de los individuos y sus motivaciones en el marco del régimen totalitario nazi (banalidad del mal).

This work focuses on the analysis of Arendtian notions of radical evil and banality of evil with the aim of taking a position in the still open debate regarding the complementarity or opposition of both conceptions of evil within the framework of Hannah Arendt's work. The literature on the matter is very broad; however, the vast majority of critical studies carry out a multidimensional approach to the problem of evil in Arendtian thought or do not specify the dimension of analysis that structures critical work. This research, on the other hand, is positioned from a moral perspective and the scope of its conclusions is limited to that dimension of analysis. The difficulty that must be faced is that the problem of evil and the moral question are not issues addressed by Arendt directly but are transversal contents that must be traced in the totality of his work. It is concluded that radical evil and the banality of evil are not mutually exclusive notions but rather function as expressions that refer to two different levels, one more general and structural and the other linked to the behavior of individuals within the government structures studied.
