Lo justo y lo tangible: los objetos materiales en la escena judicial del escudo de Aquiles (Ilíada XVIII, 497-508)

Abstract

A partir de un análisis del célebre pasaje judicial en la ékphrasis del escudo de Aquiles en la Ilíada (canto XVIII, vv. 497-508) desde las categorías conceptuales del «giro material», este trabajo se ocupa de relevar la importancia que poseen los objetos tangibles para una comprensión más acabada de las prácticas judiciales del mundo griego pre-clásico (tradicionalmente estudiadas desde los roles de agencia). Con ello, se propondrá que un examen filológico del texto, sustentado en las aportaciones teóricas del llamado Nuevo Materialismo que han comenzado a permear las ciencias sociales, puede aportar una original vía de acceso a la performance del derecho antiguo: la identificación de los objetos físicos manipulados durante el litigio ofrece datos significativos y complejiza nuestra mirada en torno no solo de la función de los jueces arcaicos sino también del juego de poder propio (real y simbólico) necesariamente involucrado en el ejercicio jurisdiccional en tiempos homéricos.

Through an analysis of the famous judicial passage in the ekphrasis of Achilles’ shield in the Iliad (Book XVIII, vv. 497-508) under the conceptual categories offered by the ‘material turn’, this paper assesses the importance of tangible objects for a more complete understanding of the judicial practices of the pre-classical Greek world (traditionally studied from agency roles). Therefore, it will be proposed that a philological examination of the text, based on the theo retical contributions of the so-called New Materialism that have begun to permeate the social sciences, can provide an original way of access to the performance of ancient law: the identification of those physical objects that are manipulated in a trial offers significant information. Such an approach can help improve our knowledge regarding the role of archaic judges and reveal the game of (real and symbolic) power involved in the judicial administration of Homeric times.
