La fiesta y la comunidad: el carnaval en el barrio obrero del Puerto de Buenos Aires a comienzos del siglo XX

Abstract

Como parte de una investigación sobre la cultura obrera portuaria en Buenos Aires a comienzos del siglo XX, este trabajo indaga las relaciones, prácticas y formas de la fiesta del carnaval en el barrio de La Boca. El puerto es aquí el territorio de la historia social que estudia la experiencia de los trabajadores, trabajadoras y sus familias. En los veranos portuarios, la trama barrial y vecinal se encendía y desplegaba en una densa sociabilidad situada en los ámbitos comunes, donde se combinaban en aquel tiempo y espacio diversos vínculos de trabajo, diversión, vecindad y militancia. En ese tiempo y espacio particular, las formas del carnaval en el barrio portuario son aquí analizadas, proponiendo una mirada histórico-social sobre la construcción barrial del carnaval, sus sujetos, prácticas y vinculaciones. Se interroga tanto por la experiencia del carnaval en tanto evento de aquel mundo del trabajo, y sobre todo, su lugar en tanto tiempo de no trabajo en la constitución de vínculos y la conformación de una comunidad obrera a orillas del Riachuelo. El carnaval es entendido desde sus formas organizativas (comparsas, orfeones y orquestas), su territorialidad, prácticas, redes y experiencias, como momento vital de la comunidad portuaria. A partir de los aportes de la historia local, del asociacionismo y la inmigración, junto a los estudios particulares sobre la historia del carnaval, este trabajo se basa en un corpus documental constituido por la prensa gremial, barrial y comercial, documentación de asociaciones, así como también revistas de actualidad y parte del registro fotográfico disponible.

Within the framework of an investigation on the port working culture in Buenos Aires at the beginning of the 20th century, this work investigates the relationships, practices and forms of the carnival festival in the La Boca neighborhood. The port represents a territory of social history used to examine the experience of workers and their families. In port summers, the neighborhood was lighted up which unfolded into spirited socialization located in common areas, where, at that time and space, various links of work, entertainment, neighborhood and militancy were combined. In this particular time and space, the forms of the carnival in the port neighborhood are analyzed here, proposing a socio-historical perspective on the neighborhood construction of the carnival, its subjects, practices and connections. The carnival experience is widely inquired about as an event in that particular work world, and, above all, its place as a time of not working for the establishment of ties and the formation of a working community on the banks of the Riachuelo. The carnival is understood through its organizational forms – comparsas(troupes), orfeons and orchestras –its territoriality, practices, networks and experiences, as a vital moment of the port community. Based on the contributions of neighborhood history, society creation and immigration, together with private studies on the history of carnival, this work is based on a documentary corpus made up of the union, neighborhood and commercial press, documentation of associations, as well as current magazines and part of the photographic record available.
