Materiales arqueológicos de la Colección Schuel de Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy, Argentina) en el National Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian Institution)

Abstract

El National Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., EEUU) posee una importante colección arqueológica de la provincia de Jujuy que ha sido equivocadamente registrada como procedente de Calilegua. En este trabajo se argumenta que en realidad proviene de distintos sitios de la Quebrada de Humahuaca, donde fueron excavados por Karl Schuel entre 1920 y 1923. Entre otras pruebas, se presta especial atención a un inventario de las piezas recuperadas en el curso de sus excavaciones que el investigador austríaco mantuvo durante esos años, donde se reconocen algunos objetos de la colección del NMAI. Se establecen los probables sitios de origen de los materiales y se evalúa sucintamente su potencial para las investigaciones sobre la historia prehispánica tardía de la región (1000-1600 d.C.).

The National Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., USA) holds an important archaeological collection from Jujuy province that has been erroneously recordedas coming from Calilegua. In this paper, we argue that these objects actually come from different sites within Quebrada de Humahuaca where Karl Schuel excavated between 1920 and 1923. Among other indicators, special attention is given to an inventory of specimens recovered in his excavations that the Austrian researcher kept during those years, where it is possible to recognize several objects belonging to the NMAI collection. We identify the most likely sites of origin of the materials and briefly assess their potential for research regarding the late prehispanic history of the region (1000-1600 C.E.).
