El barrio disputado: vecinos/as versus trans en los alrededores del Bulevar Artigas: Montevideo, 2005-2017

Abstract

El bulevar Artigas es una de las arterias principales que atraviesan la ciudad de Montevideo y allí hace más de cuarenta años que se oferta sexo en la vía pública. En este artículo el objetivo es reconstruir cómo los/as vecinos/as de dos barrios centrales de Montevideo conciben el espacio público que los rodea analizándolo desde una perspectiva del conflicto urbano, cómo se auto-perciben y cómo construyen a los cuerpos e identidades de las trans que ofertan sexo en las calles donde residen. El análisis de documentos (denuncias y transcripción de audiencia con autoridades de la ciudad) arrojó que son tres las representaciones principales utilizadas por los/as vecinos/as para expulsar a las trans. 1) la defensa de la familia y la propiedad privada; 2) la defensa de la salud del vecindario y 3) la llegada de “los raros” como amenaza que trae inseguridad al barrio.

The Artigas Boulevard is one of the main thoroughfares that cross the city of Montevideo in which there has been offered sexual services in public streets for more than forty years. In this article the objective is to reconstruct how the neighbors of two central neighborhoods of Montevideo conceive the public space that surrounds them. This analysis is from a perspective of urban conflict, how they perceive themselves and how they construct bodies and identities of the transgenders that offer sex in the streets where they reside. The analysis of documents showed that there are three main arguments used by the neighbors to promote the expulsion of trans: 1) the defense of the family and private property; 2) the defense of the health of the neighborhood and 3) the arrival of "the rare" as a threat that brings insecurity to the neighborhood.
