Ecos de Cicerón en la resolución de la circularidad entre la verdad del intelecto práctico y la rectitud del apetito en el Comentario a la Ética a Nicómaco de Tomás de Aquino

Abstract

Tomás de Aquino observa en la Ética a Nicómaco una aparente circularidad entre la verdad del intelecto práctico y la rectitud del apetito. El Aquinate logra demostrar que no hay tal circularidad postulando la existencia de fin establecido por la naturaleza, idea que guarda una estrecha relación con su teoría de la ley natural. A pesar de que el propio filósofo escolástico le adjudica esta idea al Estagirita, lo cierto es que un análisis cuidadoso de la terminología utilizada revela que su verdadera fuente es Cicerón. Esto quiere decir que Tomás de Aquino resuelve un problema netamente aristotélico a partir de nociones ciceronianas. La propuesta del presente trabajo consiste en evidenciar la influencia que Arpinate tiene en la resolución que plantea Tomás de Aquino en el Comentario a la Ética a Nicómaco.

Thomas Aquinas observes in Nicomachean Ethics an apparent circularity between the truth of the practical intellect and the rectitude of appetite. The Aquinate manages to demonstrate that there is no such circularity by postulating the existence of an end established by nature, an idea that is closely related to his theory of natural law. Although the scholastic philosopher himself awards this idea to Stagirite, the truth is that a careful analysis of the terminology used reveals that its true source is Cicero. This means that Thomas Aquinas solves a purely Aristotelian problem from Ciceronian notions. The proposal of the present work consists in evidencing the influence that Arpinate has in the resolution that Thomas Aquinas exposes in Commentary on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.
