Cuidar, gestionar, esperar: estrategias de mujeres migrantes ante contextos restrictivos de acceso a la atención sanitaria

Abstract

Objetivos. Este artículo analiza las diversas estrategias que despliegan mujeres migrantes originarias de Bolivia y del noroeste argentino, para afrontar las barreras de accesibilidad al sistema de salud durante sus recorridos migratorios vinculados con el trabajo agrícola en Argentina. Exponemos parte de los resultados de una investigación sobre experiencias de salud, enfermedad y cuidados de mujeres migrantes que trabajan en la agricultura. El enfoque teórico del estudio vincula herramientas conceptuales feministas y de la medicina social latinoamericana. Metodología. Planteamos un diseño cualitativo flexible, de carácter etnográfico, que prioriza la técnica de relatos de vida y la observación participativa. El trabajo de campo se desarrolló entre 2014 y 2018 en la localidad de Ugarteche, un territorio agrícola ubicado en el oasis norte de la provincia de Mendoza (Argentina). Conclusiones. Ante contextos restrictivos de acceso a la atención médica y a la discriminación sufrida en los servicios de salud, las mujeres migrantes interponen prácticas de gestión y cuidado que les permiten preservar su salud y la de sus grupos. Constituyen estrategias creativas orientadas a aprender saberes de la biomedicina, recuperar conocimientos de sus comunidades de origen y enfrentarse al maltrato institucional, mediante las cuales sortean barreras de acceso a la atención y lidian con contextos atemorizantes y expulsivos. Originalidad. Este artículo contribuye a un área poco explorada de los estudios de migraciones y salud, en cuanto aborda tanto las dificultades que las mujeres migrantes enfrentan en el acceso a la atención médica, como las estrategias que despliegan para sortear esas barreras y sus aportes a las sociedades de acogida mediante las labores cotidianas de cuidado.

Objectives. This article analyzes the different strategies deployed by aboriginal migrant women from Bolivia and the Argentine Northeast, in order to face the access barriers to the health system, during their migration journeys linked to agricultural work in Argentina. We showcase part of the conclusions of research work on health, illness and care of migrant women working in agriculture. The theoretical approach of the study links feminist and Latin American social medicine conceptual tools. Methodology. A flexible, qualitative, ethnographic design that prioritizes the technique of life narratives and participatory observation. Field work was carried out from 2014 through 2018 in Ugarteche, an agricultural territory in the oasis located in the north of the province of Mendoza (Argentina). Conclusions. In the face of restricted access to medical services and the discrimination suffered within the health system, migrant women implement management and care practices that allow them to preserve their own health and the health of their groups. They are creative strategies oriented at learning biomedicine, recovering knowledge from their original communities, and defying institutional mistreatment, which allow them to bypass access barriers to medical attention and deal with frightening and expulsive contexts. Originality. This article contributes to a seldom examined area of the studies on migration and health, as it addresses both the difficulties faced by migrant women as regards access to medical services, as well as the strategies they deploy to bypass said barriers and their inputs to their host communities through their daily care work.
