El significante: Encuentros entre el psicoanálisis y los estudios del lenguaje

Abstract

Este artículo analiza una noción que es compartida por el psicoanálisis y los estudios del lenguaje: el significante. Se propone abordar el trayecto que este término realiza en los seminarios y en los escritos de Jacques Lacan. A pesar de que es indudable que el psicoanalista se apropia de esta noción a partir de la lectura del Curso de lingüística general de Saussure (2007), las tramas sobre las que esta se construye dialogan con otras fuentes teóricas. El recorrido por los textos lacanianos nos ha permitido identificar tres tiempos en los que se entretejen discursivamente distintos sentidos en torno al significante. En el primero de ellos, entre 1953 y 1957, es la estructura aquella que se vincula con el modo en que se concibe esta noción y organiza sus desarrollos teóricos. En el segundo, entre 1957 y 1969, se instaura la definición de significante que continúa vigente en la actualidad y que lo enlaza con el sujeto lacaniano. Finalmente, en el tercero, cuyo inicio puede ubicarse a partir de 1969, se denuncia un significante atravesado por el registro imaginario y el registro real, que no puede ser entendido únicamente desde la mirada simbólica.

This article analyzes a notion that is shared by psychoanalysis and language studies: the signifier. Its purpose is to study the path that this term takes in the seminars and in the writings of Jacques Lacan. Although there is no doubt that the psychoanalyst appropriates this notion from the reading of the General Linguistics Course by Saussure (2007), the foundations on which it is built dialogue with other theoretical sources. The journey through the Lacanian texts has allowed us to identify three times in which different meanings are interwoven discursively around the signifier. In the first of them, between 1953 and 1957, it is the structure that is linked to the way in which this notion is conceived and organizes its theoretical developments. In the second, between 1957 and 1969, it is established the definition of the signifier that continues to be in force today and that links it to the Lacanian subject. Finally, in the third, whose beginning can be located from 1969, a signifier traversed by the imaginary register and the real register is denounced, which cannot be understood solely from the symbolic dimension.
